MMPI-2 predictors of Gray’s two-factor reinforcement sensitivity theory

چکیده
This study examined the utility of the MMPI-2 to predict Gray’s BIS/BAS dimensions in a sample of 193 Spanish undergraduates. Although the MMPI-2 is composed of numerous scale indices, we focused on the clinical, content, and the Personality Psychopathology-Five (PSY-5) scales. Overall, findings confirmed hypothesized associations between BIS/BAS factors and MMPI-2 indices. BIS scores demonstrated strong, positive relationships with numerous indices of anxiety, neuroticism, and negative affect, whereas BAS scores were positively related to indices of impulsivity, positive affect, disinhibition, extraversion, and anger. Multiple regression analyses further highlighted PSY-5 Negative Emotionality/Neuroticism scale and content scales of Low Self-esteem and Anxiety as predictors of BIS activity. By contrast, BAS activity was predicted by PSY-5 Positive Emotionality/Extraversion scale, the content scale of Type A Behavior, and the clinical scale of Hypomania. As expected, PSY-5 Constraint scale was a potent predictor of both BIS (positively) and BAS (negatively). Of particular interest, PSY-5 Aggressiveness scale predicted BIS and not BAS activity. Implications of these multivariate formulas for the assessment of BIS and BAS dimensions using the MMPI-2 are discussed. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

متن کاملGray’s Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory: a psychometric critique
This study identifies valid orthogonal scales of Gray’s animal learning paradigms, upon which his Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) is based, by determining a revised structure to the Gray–Wilson Personality Questionnaire (GWPQ) (Wilson, Gray, & Barrett, 1990). It is also determined how well Gray’s RST scales predict the surface scales of personality, which were measured in terms of Eysenc...

متن کامل1 Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory ( RST ) : introduction
The Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) of personality is a theoretical account of the neural and psychological processes underlying the major dimensions of personality. The first of this introductory chapter traces the development of RST, from its official birth in 1970, through to Gray’s highly influential 1982 The Neuropsychology of Anxiety, and on to its major revision in 2000 with the s...
متن کاملGray’s revised Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory in relation to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity and Tourette-like behaviors in the general population Authors
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Tourette Syndrome (TS) present as distinct conditions clinically; however, they show comorbidity and inhibitory control deficits have been proposed to underlie both. The role of reinforcement sensitivity in ADHD has been studied previously, but no study has addressed this in relation to TS-like behaviors in the general population. The present ...
